OT/IACS Industries and Your Role

This article is Part 3 of the article: Why Industrial and OT Cyber security Should Be Your Next Career Move

Here’s a glimpse into the diverse range of projects one could work on:

1. Energy Sector:

· You will implement robust cyber security measures to safeguard critical infrastructure such as power plants, distribution networks, renewable energy facilities, and oil refineries against cyber threats.

· Your responsibilities may include securing substations, transformers, control systems, drilling operations, pipelines, offshore platforms, and energy management systems to ensure a reliable and resilient energy supply.

· You will also deploy intrusion detection and prevention systems to detect and thwart cyber-attacks targeting critical energy infrastructure, while also safeguarding nuclear power plants, research facilities, and associated control systems from potential cyber threats.

2. Transportation and Aviation

· You will focus on protecting transportation networks, including railways, airports, and maritime ports, from cyber intrusions.

· Your role will involve ensuring the security of connected vehicles, air traffic control systems, and unmanned aerial vehicles (drones), as well as securing connected and autonomous vehicles and vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication systems.

· You will implement cyber security measures for automotive manufacturing and supply chain operations to mitigate cyber risks in the transportation industry.

3. Water and Wastewater Systems:

· Your responsibilities will include safeguarding water treatment plants, distribution networks, and wastewater treatment facilities from cyber threats.

· You will work on implementing cyber security best practices to prevent unauthorized access to essential water infrastructure, ensuring the integrity and security of water supply systems.

4. Smart Buildings and Smart Cities:

· You will focus on safeguarding smart buildings, city infrastructure, building automation systems, HVAC controls, and IoT devices from cyber-attacks.

· Your role will involve designing cyber security frameworks for smart city initiatives, including connected infrastructure, transportation systems, and public services, to enhance the resilience of urban environments against cyber threats.

5. Manufacturing and Supply chain security of Industrial Control Systems (ICS):

· You will be responsible for securing industrial automation and control systems (IACS) in manufacturing plants, chemical facilities, refineries, and other industrial environments.

· Your tasks may include conducting security assessments and audits for supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems, implementing cyber security measures for mining operations and mineral processing plants, and safeguarding logistics networks and manufacturing processes from cyberattacks that could disrupt supply chains.

6. Healthcare and Medical Devices:

· You will focus on protecting medical devices, hospital networks, and electronic health records (EHRs) from cyber threats.

· Your role will involve ensuring the security and privacy of patient data while maintaining the integrity and availability of critical healthcare services.

7. Telecommunications:

· You will work on securing telecommunication networks, including cellular networks, Internet exchanges, data centres, and communication infrastructure, against cyberattacks that could disrupt communication services.

· Your responsibilities may include protecting operational technologies and ensuring service availability for telecommunications providers.

8. Defence and Military:

· You will be tasked with protecting military operational technologies, weapon systems, and communication and command-and-control networks from cyber threats.

· Your role will involve ensuring cyber security for defence infrastructure, bases, and mission-critical systems to maintain national security and readiness.

9. Space and Aerospace:

· You will focus on securing space exploration systems, satellites, and ground control stations from cyber threats.

· Your responsibilities may include implementing cyber security measures for aerospace manufacturing and testing facilities to safeguard sensitive aerospace technologies.

10. Food and Agriculture:

· You will work on protecting food production, processing, and distribution systems from cyber threats.

Your role will involve securing agricultural operational technologies, such as precision farming equipment, agricultural automation systems, and smart farming technologies, to ensure the security and integrity of food supply chains.
